Grape variety facts:
Zweigelt is a crossing between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent and the most widespread red wine variety in Austria. At the end of the last century, when red wine variety plantings began to increase, the Blauer Zweigelt represented the biggest share of red wines in the vineyards. Today, it is still the most important red variety in all of Austria's winegrowing regions. Between 1999 and 2015, its vineyard surface coverage increased strongly, but has stabilised by now.
